Why Niche Matters

Choosing the right niche is crucial for your e-commerce success. Here are some key points and steps to help you identify and validate your niche.


Key Considerations


Commonplace, Not Trending:

  • Look for a niche that is familiar to people, so you don’t have to spend too much time educating your audience.

  • Avoid hyper-trending niches that may fizzle out quickly (e.g., loom bands).


Consumable Products:

  • If your niche involves consumable products, it increases the chances of repeat purchases, which is great for sustained business.


Audience Size:

  • Ensure your niche has a substantial audience. For Australia, aim for at least 2 million people, and for the US, at least 20 million.


Ease of Advertising:

  • Choose a niche that isn't tricky to advertise on platforms like Meta (Facebook and Instagram).

Shipping Feasibility:

  • Opt for products that are easy and cost-effective to ship. Drop shipping can be a good option if you plan to sell the brand later.


Hobbies and Pets:

  • Niches related to hobbies or pets are often lucrative as people are willing to spend on these interests.


Content Creation:

  • Make sure you can create content or blogs around your niche to drive organic traffic and establish authority.


Steps to Validate Your Niche:


Use Google Trends:

  • Check search data over the past five years to see if interest is consistent.

  • Look at related queries to ensure there's substantial interest in your niche.


Meta Audience Insights:

  • Build an audience in Meta to check if your niche has a significant number of people interested.


Niche Validation Criteria:


  • Commonplace and not trending

  • Consumable

  • Substantial niche size in Australia and the US

  • Easy to advertise on Meta

  • Feasibility of drop shipping

  • Related to hobbies or pets

  • Ability to create content or blogs

  • Positive Google Trends data

  • Adequate Meta audience size


Top-Level Decisions:


  • Are you starting from scratch or buying an existing brand? Example: You can purchase an existing brand from marketplaces like Flippa.

  • Do you want to sell direct to consumers or wholesale? Example: Decide if you will sell cement powder in bulk or pre-made garden stepping stones.

  • Which niches are you ruling out? Example: Fashion, home decor, tech, infants, and crypto.


Practical Tips:


  • Set Reminders:

Use a physical reminder, like a rubber band, to stay attuned to potential niche ideas throughout your day. Leverage Your Network: Ask family and friends for niche ideas. They can offer unique perspectives and suggestions you might not have considered.

Observe Your Surroundings: Look at everyday items around you. Everything you see was once a product idea, manufactured, and sold.

I’ve dabbled in e-commerce for decades but went full-time in 2023 after taking a year of unpaid leave to build my Shopify brands.

I successfully sold one of my brands at the end of 2023 and am now planning a new e-commerce venture in 2024.


  • New Brand Goals:

This new brand is intended to be built and sold within two years. I want it to be saleable and not necessarily something I need to love deeply or keep for decades.
